With the end of the year fast approaching, we've all been wondering what 2018 has in store. Forrester Research has provided the answers in its latest report, entitled "Predictions 2018: The Honeymoon for AI is over". The study predicts that artificial intelligence (AI) will finally become more than just hype. Companies will increasingly start to realize that AI requires significant effort in terms of planning, delivery, and management – and the profession of aata engineere will become ever-more critical to the implementation of the technology.
People and machines finally working hand in hand
The new Forrester Report forecasts a number of significant developments for 2018, including:
- Improved collaboration between people and machines thanks to optimized interfaces
- More effective business intelligence solutions as resources are increasingly stored in the cloud
- New AI-based analysis functions that will drive the development of an Insights-as-a-Service market
According to the report, 70 percent of companies are planning on rolling out some form of AI technology over the next 12 months; a huge leap compared to the 40 percent figure reported in 2016 and the 51 percent reported in 2017.
The hottest job of 2018
Forrester also notes that the role of data engineer – which refers to any expert who develops, constructs, tests, and maintains architectures – will become the hottest job title of 2018. Based on an analysis of published job advertisements, 13 percent of data-related vacancies are targeted at data engineers, while less than 1 percent of advertisements call for data scientists. This statistic proves that big data applications are increasingly viewed as critical to the success of a company, and that business analysts rely on the support of data experts.
Public cloud for big data projects
Forrester predicts that 50 percent of companies will utilize a public-cloud-first strategy in 2018, integrating cloud resources from providers such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) or Microsoft Azure for data-intensive projects. These solutions provide greater control of costs and offer significantly more flexibility than on-premise solutions alone.
Forrester also believes that the majority of chief data officers (CDO) will next year transition from a "defensive" to a more "offensive" strategy, and will increasingly start to apply data to business optimization and development goals – both through the analysis of internal business processes as well as through external data-based products and services.
